Wildflowers - Mushrooms - Lichens & Moss ...found in New York

- Tussilago farfara

Daisy Family
Naturalized alien

The flowers on purplish, scaly stems are the first thing to appear in early spring. The leaves emerge once the flowers set seed.

The flowers and fuzzy seed heads look a lot like Dandelions. They often grow and flower at the same time, sometimes together along roadsides. What you may assume to be Dandelions while driving may just be Coltsfoot.

A traditional medicinal plant. Toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids have been found in the plant raising liver health concerns.

Found: Roadsides, waste places, railroad shoulders
