The flowers on purplish, scaly stems are the first thing to appear in early spring. The leaves emerge once the flowers set seed.
The flowers and fuzzy seed heads look a lot like Dandelions. They often grow and flower at the same time, sometimes together along roadsides. What you may assume to be Dandelions while driving may just be Coltsfoot.
A traditional medicinal plant. Toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids have been found in the plant raising liver health concerns.
