The common names are derived from the zigzag stem and broad leaves respectively.
Probably the easiest goldenrod to identify. Good thing there's only one zigzag.
While goldenrod types are easy enough to break down into groups based on flower head shape and leaf veining it's not so easy to pin point a specific species.
Flower types: graceful plumes, elm branched, club-like, wand-like and flat topped
Leaf types: feather veined and parrallel veined
