A perennial plant that does not flower but rather produces spores. There are two stages of growth. Early Spring growth is a non-photosynthetic fertile spore-bearing stem followed by the non-reproductive green stems that persist through the growing season.
The plant spreads by rhizomes (roots) and can establish large colonies of clones
